Kevan Hall White Label Collection Returns to Mark Ingram

Last Fall, Mark welcomed his friend designer Kevan Hall to the Atelier to present his first bridal collection to the press. Now the collection returns for the first time for brides to experience. The Kevan Hall White Label trunk show runs Thursday, February 17th, through Saturday, February 19th.

We love Kevan's sophisticated take on soft, romantic bridal gowns. A long time favorite on the red carpet, Kevan's mix of glamour and romance is perfect for our brides!

Starting today, Mark Ingram Atelier will be hosting a very special Rose Taft Special Occasion trunk show featuring the debut of the Melanie Harris Collection designed by Rose Taft's granddaughter Melanie Harris Silverman as well as the beloved Rose Taft collection.

Now, third generation, Melanie Silverman, with tremendous creativity and the love of fashion, has created a collection that is a direct reflection of her modern and fresh design philosophy for today’s younger woman of style. Originally this collection was designed by request only for the likes of several LA stylists and has since drawn the attention of “young Hollywood.”

The Melanie Harris collection is custom made by hand in the Rose Taft factory in Miami, Florida. Each style is meticulously constructed individually by couture craftsman using only the finest fabrications from around the globe.

We love these styles for a bride's engagement or after parties or perhaps for the mother of the occasion who wants a little extra sparkle?

What a night! We were honored to welcome Brides Magazine and designers Anne Barge, Angel Sanchez and Rita Vineris of Rivini into the Atelier for an wonderful evening where they discussed inspiration and bridal fashion with Mark. The designers candidly answered questions from brides and a few bloggers on topics ranging from who inspired them to become a designer -Angel and Rita were both encouraged by their seamstress mothers -- to what works best on a petite bride -- Anne answered that one perfectly! Each designer showed off a new gown that they will introduce this week at NY Bridal Market and one lucky bride won a chance to sit with the Bride's editors at Sunday's Anne Barge Fashion Show.

A special thank you to Bride's Magazine, Upper Crust Catering and Classic Travel for participating in the event with us. Classic Travel made a donation to Bride's White Hot Hope Initiative for each bride that registered with them. Additionally, Mark will donate a portion of each Anne Barge, Angel Sanchez or Rivini gown sold to a bride who attended the event to White Hot Hope. What's White Hot in Bridal Today

We are thrilled to be hosting a special event in the Atelier on October 13th to benefit Brides Magazine's White Hot Hope initiative. White Hot Hope is a national, month long program of bridal retail events that benefit Operation Smile and Dress for Success. For White Hot Hope, Mark wanted to bring the design process to his brides in a way that had not been done before. So with the team at Brides, we have designed an evening with three of Mark's favorite designers and friends: Anne Barge, Angel Sanchez and Rita Vineris of Rivini. Mark will moderate a panel discussion between brides and the designers on what inspires them when designing a gown and how this affects their design process. Brides will also have a sneak peek at the designers new gowns that will debut at the upcoming NY Bridal Week.

Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier will donate a portion of gown sales from any brides who attend the event to White Hot Hope. Additionally, Classic Travel will be there to take brides Honeymoon planning questions and will also make a donation to White Hot Hope for each Bride who registers for their services.

Liz ,Dick and One Degree of Separation

I recently had a rare leisurely Saturday at the beach to catch up on my magazines. One of my guilty pleasures is Vanity Fair, and I was pleasantly surprised to see a vintage photo of Elizabeth Taylor gracing the cover of the June 2010 issue. The article inside was the delicious re-telling of her whirlwind and scandalous affair…… and subsequent marriage to superstar actor Richard Burton. At the time……and we are talking about the “Mad Men” era of the early ‘60’s, this union shocked the world and was even condemned by The Vatican. Vanity Fair likened them to modern day superstar couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. I was just a young lad at the time, but I have to admit that I was totally fascinated and awestruck by the comings and goings of this gorgeous megawatt superstar couple. Of course I was mesmerized by Elizabeth’s breathtaking physical beauty, but as a couple they had tremendous style and chutzpah. And it seems that every move they made was chronicled by the paparazzi! I had other reasons for my fascination, for you see, by only ‘one degree of separation’ I had some personal connection to the legend that was ‘Liz & Dick’.

I will never forget the day that the envelope from my mom arrived at summer sleep-a-way camp. In it was a note and newspaper article chronicling Liz and Dick’s attendance at a Caxton Hall, London wedding. But it wasn’t just any wedding . It was the wedding of Gladys Mills, a personal friend of my family, and Robert Wilson. BobWilson, was personal assistant and confidante to Richard Burton, and Gladys was one of my grandmother’s and great aunt Thelma’s closest friends. Liz & Dick were not just merely guests in attendance at this wedding, but served as Best Man and Matron of Honor to the couple. I have distinct childhood memories of Gladys and Bob…..a dashing, sophisticated and terrifically chic middle aged jet set couple being entertained at my parents’ home. My mother recalled their glamorous life style and the ‘all white and chrome’ apartment in a luxury hi-rise. So given my interest in the whole Liz & Dick saga and a personal connection to Gladys and Bob……..plus my love (even at that age) of all things WEDDINGS, I was in my GLORY!

I was recently sorting through some old family photos when I came across the wedding portraits of Gladys and Bob. I sat down and recalled the thrill of that time for my family, and how excited we all were for her ….not just because of the Liz and Dick thing, but because Gladys & Bob had found each other in their middle age and Gladys was radiantly happy! But of course the Liz and Dick connection raised the thrill factor for this star struck adolescent! Lol!

While recently in Milan for the Italian Bridal Market, I was able to see the Luisa Beccaria Bridal Collection. My staff and brides are huge fans of their ready to wear collections, so I jumped at the opportunity to view their bridal collection. I was not disappointed! The collection offered romantic ballgowns and cocktail dresses in a palette of pale colors and ivories. The Luisa Beccaria philosophy of "extravagant chic" was evident in the fabrication and exquisite detailing of each piece.

I am thrilled to bring the Luisa Beccaria Bridal Collection exclusively to New York. The collection will be available at my Bridal Atelier in early Fall.

Last week, I had the pleasure of hosting Sara Rue, actress and Jenny Craig celebrity spokesperson, for a tea to celebrate her 40lb weight loss on the Jenny Craig program and her upcoming 2011 wedding. Sara, who most recently starred in one of my fav TV shows Eastwick, was an absolute delight! Her enthusiasm for the Jenny Craig program and her determination to look and feel her best on her wedding day was truly inspiring. After mingling with guests from the bridal industry, Sara and I got down to business and started looking at gowns. I had pre-selected a few choices for her in three categories: Destination, Formal Ballroom and Hollywood Glamour. Sara chose her favorites and is going to get busy on planning her wedding. Once she chooses a venue, she will come back and find her perfect gown.

Sara has learned so much about health and well being from the Jenny Craig program, following are our "official tips" on how to look and feel beautiful on your wedding day.

Bride's Newlywed Nest

Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier is VERY excited to participate in Bride's Magazine and Brides.com's Newlywed Nest in New York City. Bride's and interior designer Inson Dubois Wood have "transformed an eco-luxury two-bedroom triplex apartment into a stylish, attainable and sustainably-chic space." The apartment will be hosting bridal events for the next month and proceeds raised will benefit the Lower East Side Girls Club. We plan on visiting the on-site "Girls Club's Sweet Things Pop-up Bake Shop" many, many times!

We will be co-hosting a special Mother/Daughter cocktail party at the Newlywed Nest on May 13th, just in time for Mother's Day! Mark is picking out some of our best Mother of the Occasion gowns and of course, a few show stopping bridal gowns as well, for an informal fashion presentation. Once a year, we are treated to one of the best displays of exquisite bridal fashion at the Oscar De la Renta Bridal Runway Show. Held at the ODLR showroom, the show is intimate, elegant and breathtakingly beautiful. The atmosphere, the styling, and most importantly the gowns are perfect down to the last detail.

After the excitement of the show, it is hard for us to imagine we will not have the collection in the Atelier until Fall. However, we are so happy to announce we will have the new Spring 2011 collection at a special Trunk Show May 6 -8!

We have been very busy running around the city this past weekend viewing the new collections from our favorite designers. As usual, our designers did not disappoint! We are spotting some great new trends and seeing some details reinterpretted. Shades of blush and pink are everywhere, but we were especially blown away by the use of lilac and charcoal at Vera Wang. Black accents continue, a favorite was subtle black ribbon at Carolina Herrera. For beading, silver and crystal beading with an icey feel abound. Last weekend we participated in The Wedding Party held at the New York Palace hotel and organized by Claudia Hanlin and Jennifer Zabinski of The Wedding Library. It was certainly the party of the year! Our friends Colin Cowie and Darcy Miller gave wonderful presentations and then the brides were free to visit the numerous vendors at the hotel. We were very proud to be part of the event and truly enjoyed meeting all the brides who stopped by to speak with us. The day concluded with a fashion show featuring bridesmaid gowns from The Wedding Library and bridal gowns from Vera Wang. Here are a few pics from the fun day.

Dom Perignon Wedding Luncheon

I recently attended a fabulous lunch introducing the new Dom Perignon Champagne for weddings in the magnificent private event space on the 21st floor of the LVMH office tower on East 57th street. The room offered breathtaking panoramic views of the city. After an introduction by Colin Cowie and a brief speech by Dom Perignon exec about the launch of the new bridal special edition champagne, the who's who of the industry sat down to a lunch prepared by chef Daniel Boloud, who was seated near me to my right opposite Sylvia Weinstock. I was seated next to Gotham & Hamptons Magazine Editor in Chief Samantha Yanks and Ed Chapman, President of Marchesa and brother of Marchesa co-designer Georgina Chapman.

I love the exquisite L shaped tables decorated with calla lilies in mirrored vases and large glass 'bubbles', don't you?

Dom Perignon Wedding is a collection of 12 bottles of Dom Pérignon Vintage 2000 cased in a beautiful white lacquered box. The box also has an additional 13th bottle, which features the names of the bride and groom engraved on a silver label. If you save the toasting flutes, why not the bottle as well!

This past market the consultants and I had the pleasure of visiting the lower Chelsea loft of Marchesa, designed by lovely Brits' Kaeren Craig and Georgina Chapman. A longtime fan of Marchesa's spectacular evening collection, I was dying to see their first made-to-order bridal collection. We were not disappointed! Keren and Georgina flawlessly translated their glamorous red carpet styles to bridal. While retaining a glamorous edge, the bridal collection is feminine, romantic and sophisticated. The detailed embroideries are perfectly combined with skillful draping and exquisite fabrication. Simply devine!

We will be hosting our first Marchesa trunk show January 21st through the 23rd. The entire Marchesa Bridal Collection will be here and Keren and Georgina will be stopping by to meet with brides as well!

Santa is coming early to the Bridal Atelier this year! We will be hosting an Oscar de la Renta Trunk Show December 17th - 19th. At the show we will be premiering our new New York exclusive bridal gown, as well as all of Oscar's newest gowns and accessories. At the latest New York Bridal Market, Oscar showed a small capsule collection of gowns and beautiful boleros to add to the extensive collection he had showed for 2010 in the Spring. We will be presenting the entire collection at the trunk show and these are gowns you do not want to miss. Oscar's attention to detail and use of fabrication to create texture is unparalleled and simply beautiful.

Martha Stewart Craft Show in NYC

On Friday, I had the pleasure of being the guest of Martha Stewart Weddings Publisher Amy Wilkins at the Martha Stewart Craft Show in NYC. Friday was a special preview of the show for invited guests and then the event was open to the public on Saturday and Sunday. The craft show was held at Martha's NYC offices and involved her whole team. My friend Anne Barge was in town for a trunk show at the Atelier and joined my for a fun night of shopping the crafts galore!

Recently, Anne Barge hosted a "Boot Camp" at her headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. I was lucky enough to be chosen to attend and I'm so glad I was able to go! Anne and her staff went above and beyond to make me and about 20 other bridal consultants from across the country feel welcome.

Anne's objective was to have each salon send a representative to become an Anne Barge specialist. I've always loved her gowns and I've always connected to the traditional core of them, so being able to work with her personally and having her share her first hand knowledge was priceless.

For two days, we learned everything there is to know about Anne Barge gowns. Whether it's her use of Italian silks, French laces or intricate embroideries, Anne's gowns always have a timeless bridal feeling about them. Each one is special in its own way and each one is designed with a bride's happiness in mind.

Now that I'm back in New York, I feel like a true expert on our Anne Barge designs and I have a new found excitement to show them and match each one to the right bride!

This past weekend we participated in the first Martha Stewart Online Luxury Weddings Expo. We were able to have live "chats" in our booth with bride and MOB/MOG's from around the country. It was so exciting! Thank you all for your great fashion questions. Mark and our consultants gave advice on accessories, sizing, trunk shows and our special occasion collection. The Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Gala

This week I had the pleasure of attending the Martha Stewart Center for Living at Mount Sinai Gala as a guest of my dear friend Darcy Miller, Editorial Director of Martha Stewart Weddings. The Gala was held at Starrett Lehigh bulding in Manhattan, which houses the offices of Martha Stewart Omnimedia. According to Martha, "The Center for Living is designed to provide out patients with whole patient care, including medical examinations, advice about diet and exercise, and the all important need for care giving. Simply stated, the main focus of the center is to teach how to grow old gracefully, something we should all start focusing on around the age of fifty."

The event was emceed by Liz Smith and honored legendary editor and journalist Sir Harold Evans. More than one million dollars was raised. Martha Stewart Luxury Weddings Expo

We are preparing for our first online Weddings Expo with Martha Stewart on November 14th & 15th. The online experience recreates an actual upscale weddings expo that you can attend from the comfort of home (or work, or starbucks, or where ever you are with your computer). The Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier "booth" will be premiering a mini-documentary on the Bridal Atelier experience that features some of our favorite brides as well as top event planners Loulie Walker and Michele Rago. The booth will also feature videos showcasing our bridal and evening collections and downloadable lookbooks. Our consultants will be live at the online Expo answering questions on November 14th & 15th, although access is open to the booth through February 28, 2010.

Additionally, Mark was chosen by the editors of Martha Stewart Weddings to be a featured expert on their Weddings 101 booth at the expo. The Weddings 101 booth presents informative videos featuring experts from Martha Stewart Weddings like Editorial Director Darcy Miller and other top wedding professionals. In Mark's video, he discusses the best practices for wedding dress shopping with Darcy Miller. Mark had such a great time filming with Darcy and her team. We can't wait to see the finished video on the expo this weekend!

Rose Taft at Madame Tussads Hollywood

Congratulations to our friends at Rose Taft! Not only did we have a fabulous trunk show with them this week, they are being immortalized at Madame Tussads Hollywood. Mary Hart, anchor of Entertainment Tonight, is being replicated in wax at Madame Tussads and has chosen the red silk taffeta Rose Taft gown she wore to the 2009 Golden Globes for her wax self to wear. What a great choice Mary, you look divine in red!

Our first trunk show with the Rose Taft collection was a tremendous success. We loved having Marcia and Melanie, the daughter and grand-daughter of the late Rose Taft, in the store working with our mothers of the occasion. They were so wonderful with our clientele, making sure every last concern was properly addressed. We are already booking for our next trunk show with them in February. In the mean time, our in-house collection of beautiful Rose Taft evening wear has arrived!

Mark's Q&A: Loulie Walker of Loulie Walker Events

My dear friend Loulie Walker heads up LWE, a boutique event planning firm specializing in sophisticated and customized weddings. Loulie works one-on-one with each bride offering a tailored menu of planning services reflective of the client’s style, sensibilities and specific needs.

1. What do you love most about weddings?
Weddings speak to the two sides of my personality – first the organized, detail oriented, military precision (!) side and second the creative, romantic, dreamer side. Each wedding is an opportunity to capture the personality of a couple and inject their relationship and story into the evening. Nothing is more gratifying than the moment at the end of the evening when the bride and groom, as well as their guests, declare the wedding magical and unforgettable.

2. What makes a Loulie Walker event different? How does your incredible attention to detail affect the overall event?
I think our weddings are different because of the degree of personalization coupled with our attention to detail and orchestration. No two weddings are the same. Part of why I love my job is that each couple presents a new challenge – to get to know the bride and groom and together create a wedding reflective of them. Whether thru the menu, the cocktails, the music, or the event design, each wedding bears the stamp of the couple.
We encourage our clients to envision their wedding from the point of view of both host and guest as we believe a wedding is a statement of hospitality. It is the smallest touches and gestures that make an evening memorable – a handwritten note card from the couple on each chair back, a little goodnight treat on a pillow each night of a destination affair, framed photographs of a couple’s family thru the generations as cocktail hour décor. It is not about price but about personalization.
Our attention to detail is also what sets us apart. A wedding involves so many different aspects – the venue, the vendors (caterer, rentals, florist, musicians, photographer, videographer) - in order for everything to flow seamlessly every detail must be thought out in advanced with a Plan A and multiple contingency plans. Our job is to anticipate and accommodate. And yet while the rhythm of a wedding is finely tuned, it should look completely unscripted to guests.
And finally there is the orchestration of the event – we are on-site the day of the wedding – first at the reception venue to oversee vendor load in and installation which typically begins at dawn if not the day before. I am with the bride at the ceremony to send her down the aisle and at the reception to subtly cue toasts and dances. I have an amazing team and could not execute each wedding without them. We love what we do and that shows through in our weddings.

3. Describe your relationship with a bride while planning her wedding.
It is certainly a close relationship as we are usually working together over several months. That being said, certain brides wish to be more involved than others, it is up to them and what their schedule allows. Some clients require more hand holding than others. While some, though the exception, say run with it and they give us creative license to create a wedding based simply on initial meetings. After just 90 days of planning, one bride saw her event design for the first time walking into her reception with her new husband by her side – their reaction that moment is why I do what I do.

4. You bring in the most fabulous brides to the Atelier! Tell us a little about your brides and why they chose you as their planner.
I have been so blessed with my brides over the past nine years. The majority of our brides are professional, sophisticated women with careers and limited time. They are looking for someone who can streamline and communicate their ideas, handle the legwork, and allow them to be in the role of decision maker.
So much of wedding planning is personality, and I think the brides who select me as their planner do so because there is a personality fit from the first meeting. They are immediately at ease, feel comfortable on all levels and know that they are going to enjoy the planning process. Brides also love that the get to work hand in hand with myself, there is no junior planner. I pride myself on service and I think that is sensed immediately by potential clients. Our weddings and former brides speak for us – there is very little ‘sell’ necessary on my part.
I remain friends with my brides long after their wedding and often times end up planning baby showers and other events for them as well.

5. Besides wanting to visit me, why do you bring your brides into the Atelier?
Well besides your fabulous self, I bring our brides to the Atelier because not only is your selection of dresses the best the city has to offer (Carolina Herrera, Oscar de la Renta, Monique Lhuillier, Lela Rose, Elizabeth Fillmore, Angel Sanchez to name just a few!), but also because of the Atelier’s unparalleled service. Shopping for and selecting a wedding dress is such a personal experience and brides are met with an inviting and intimate atmosphere at The Atelier. A bride is attended to every step of the way by your staff.
I love the process at the Atelier - a bride is paired with a consultant and they work together from beginning to end. Your consultants are in effect stylists – they take the entire look into consideration – from the dress to the veil, jewels, shoes, and even undergarments. The consultants’ ability to zero in on what is important to a bride and to put a bride at ease is why I bring my clients to you. No detail is overlooked at your Atelier.

6. What is currently your favorite gown in the Atelier?
A strapless Giambattista Valli gown perfect for a destination beach wedding! It is romantic and soft yet still playful and dramatic.

We are thrilled to announce we have added Rose Taft Couture to our Atelier 2 collection of special occasion gowns. Beginning this Fall, Rose Taft Couture will be exclusively available in New York City at Mark Ingram. We will be celebrating our newest line for "mothers of the occasion" with an appointment only trunk show on Wednesday, November 4th. Marcia Taft, daughter of the late Rose Taft and President of Rose Taft Couture, will be making her only New York City appearance for the season at our trunk show. Marcia and her daughter Melanie, create luxurious evening wear in the tradition started by founder Rose Taft over 40 years ago.

We LOVE Marchesa! We have been dying to get our hands on their bridal collection and we are counting down the days until we see it at the upcoming NYC bridal market in October. In the mean time, we got a tease by going to see the Spring '10 ready to wear presentation yesterday. It was divine! The collection was shown at the Chelsea Museum and each piece was modeled on platforms in a maze like setting. Beautiful gauze drapes divided the maze and the celebrity filled crowd wandered through to view the pieces of the collection. We loved how the editors, buyers and celebs all mingled together. Below are some of my favorite pieces. I think they all could be interpreted beautifully into bridal!

After some Fashion Week stops, we made our way over to Bloomingdale's for their "Pre-Wedding" Wedding Party. Hannah Soule from Bloomingdale's put together a lovely and lively event with Martha Stewart Weddings, Monique Lhuillier, Slyvia Weinstock Cakes anf ThomJames Florals. Darcy Miller of Martha Stewart Weddings and Monique Lhuillier presented a Q&A for the attending engaged couples and friends and we had our favorite models Candy and Chandra modeling some gorgeous new Monique Lhuillier gowns. First we stopped by the Monique Lhuillier Spring ready to wear presentation at Christie's Auction House. Monique was inspired by the intricate draping of the Masai Warriors and let me tell you the collection was fierce! Later on we joined Monique and Martha Stewart Editorial Director Darcy Miller at Bloomingdale's for a fabulous wedding event. We are so excited to be hosting a Lela Rose trunk show all this week! We adore Lela's fabulous gowns almost as much as we do Lela herself. Having the entire Lela Rose Bridal Collection in the Atelier all week makes us want to come to work on beautiful Summer days!

In anticipation, we asked Ms. Rose a few questions about her collection and inspiration.

Most brides shopping now are having Spring/Summer 2010 weddings. What is your favorite gown for an outdoor wedding?

"I like silk chiffon for an outdoor wedding. The fabric is light weight, has great movement in the breeze and allows the bride to be comfortable despite the temperature. I love The Loft from my Fall 2009 collection for this. You have the option of wearing the straps 4 different ways throughout the evening."

How about a formal evening affair in the city?

"The Library- this gown has the perfect amount of sparkle without being over the top."

How has your bridal collection evolved since its original inception?

"The aesthetic has remained the same. The use of cotton fabrics, tactile embroideries and appliqué laces are still the foundation of the collection. I think we have evolved in the shapes that we are offering. Now that we have more selling history, we are able to take best selling shapes and update them. In addition, we have added accessories such as beaded belts. These give brides the option of personalizing their gowns."

Now that you also design for bridesmaids, has this changed how you design your bridal gowns?

"Actually, the bridesmaid gowns are inspired by the wedding gowns. There is a wonderful synergy between the two collections. However, you will never see a bride looking like her bridesmaids!"

Lela Rose is one of the most popular lines in the Bridal Atelier. Why do you think you connect so well with Mark's brides?

"Mark and his staff have supported the Lela Rose Wedding collection since its inception. We continue each season to do what we do best but work closely with him to make sure that his store has what they need from us. This partnership has been instrumental to our success. "

Mark's Tips for Outdoor Weddings

While most assume an outdoor or destination wedding to be a casual affair, today’s brides are proving them wrong. Many brides are finding new and unique locales to host their nuptials ranging from remote, private beaches to grand European villas. The choices are endless.

One thing all brides who choose an outdoor or seasonal wedding share is a sense of adventure and usually a naturalistic love of the outdoors. These brides all feel that the perfect spot to say I Do is not in the family church, but by sunset in Bali or on a mountaintop in Vermont. The fashion for these types of weddings can be as diverse as the locations. From working with bride’s in my Atelier, I have found the following locations to be the most popular: a beach or tropical resort, a ski resort or Mt. Lodge, in wine country or a summer mountain or farm setting, or a European location at a castle or villa.

1. For a beach or tropical wedding, which is the most popular spot for outdoor weddings, the bride is whimsical and free spirited. She may choose a more formal free flowing gown of organza or chiffon, or she may go more casual and adorn a short dress or ethnic inspired sarong. These looks are great to accessorize with organic beachy elements such as seashells, tropical flowers and pearls. Designers such as Angel Sanchez, Le Spose di Gio and Monique Lhuillier, create some spectacular tropical looks.

2. For a ski resort or Mt. Lodge the bride is normally athletic or a nature goddess. The gown is usually substantial due to the climate and may have sleeves or be paired with a coat. Satins, brocades, velvets and tulle lend themselves beautifully for this style of gown. This is also the perfect occasion to add fur trim or a grand opera style coat. My favorite designers for these looks are Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Anne Barge and Rivini.

3. Wine country or perhaps Vermont in the Summer, is a favorite of New York City brides who want to escape a city wedding. These weddings tend not to be as lavish, but focus on specific details: wonderful wines and food, beautiful nature settings. While they may not be grand in scale, they still can be very chic. The wedding gown styles favored at these affairs are more tailored, cleaner but still sophisticated. Fabrics such as satins, silk mikado and silk gazar provide great structure combined with luxury detail. New stretch chiffons, like those offered by Italian designer Spose di Gio, are the perfect understated combination of structure and style. Other
designers who offer great intellectual or 'organic couture' looks are Lela Rose and Jenny Lee.

4. If you choose a European villa or castle for your wedding, you’re in good company. These locales call for the grandest of dresses. Whether grand in a traditional sense or modern and edgy, these girls and their gowns will get noticed. Opulent duchess satins can be beaded or embroidered to create the perfect, dramatic gown. Lace is perfect in an old world setting invoking images of royalty. Oscar de la Renta, Peter Langner, Anne Barge and Monique Lhuillier all design fabulous diva dresses.

Wherever you may chose to host your wedding, remember to pick a gown that flatters the location, the season and your personality.

A Great Way to Personalize Your Wedding Gown

One aspect of the Bridal Atelier that I am most proud of is the personal service that my wonderful consultants strive to provide to each and every bride who enters our doors. They truly work with each bride to help them create a look that is uniquely their own. Lately, I have been noticing accessories playing a larger part in the styling process, most noticably belts.

Belts and sashes are not new to bridal. But they became increasingly popular in the past few years as designers began to show more natural waisted styles. Monique Lhuillier re-introduced the satin ribbon sash in her 2003 collection. She encouraged brides to try different sashes with many different styles of her gowns......full ballgowns, narrow A-lines, and everything LACE!!! Eventually, her sashes became available in several shades of whites and ivories, as well as vibrant and rich hues like teal, Victorian Rose & plum. Her styles influenced the entire bridal market!

Today's top designers offer sahses and belts in a multitude of fabrics with various beading and embellishments. I love that my staff can read a bride who loves a gown by one designer and but thinks it needs a "little something." They add a belt, possibly from a different designer, and it adds exactly what the bride was looking for! A unique gown that is a look all their own.

Belts and sashes are also great for drawing attention to some areas of the figure and de-emphasizing other areas. A girl with a pear shape may feel her hips look big in a gown, but when a beatiful belt is added, attention is brought to her waist and the hips de-emphasized. The same is especially true for a girl with a boy shape, even a simple organza sash can suggest a shaped waistline.

My Friend and Atelier Bride Vanessa Rissetto

I wanted to try something a little different today and blog about my dear friend Vanessa Rissetto. Vanessa is a fabulous nutritionist who we recommend on our vendor page to brides for nutritional counseling.

Fate brought Vanessa and I together. We met when I was a featured guest on the Martha show in the Fall of 2005. The Martha team had asked me to help "save" three brides who had not been successful in their gown search. We had each of the three lovely brides to my Atelier and helped them find and style the best look for their wedding day. We then appeared with the girls on Martha for a fashion runway segment of their new wedding day looks. At the end of the segment, Martha and I surprised each of the girls by telling them their gown was a gift from me! To view a clip of the show on the Bridal Atelier website, click here.

As Vanessa returned to the Atelier to finalize the details of her gown and have her fittings, we got to know each other better. She invited me to her beautiful wedding at Fordham University and gorgeous reception overlooking the New York skyline and Hudson River. I felt like part of the wedding party; helping Vanessa into her dress and partying with her and her bridesmaids before the ceremony. I was even priviledged to ride with her to the church! I felt very special and blessed to be part of her big day. We all danced the night away and I truly felt I had known Vanessa's family and friends forever!

Since her wedding, Vanessa and I get together frequently. I am the godfather to her Yorkie "Marley"!!!! She has also helped me with my daily diet and meal planning. She has taught me so much about nutrition and the importance of healthy eating. So many of my brides come in for fittings and are losing weight incorrectly. It only adds more stress to this happy time in their life! Seeking the advice of a nutritional counselor, like Vanessa, is the right way to go!

Instead of white, think seasonal and shop for an ivory or off-white dress. A sash in chocolate brown, plum or navy adds an autumnal accent to your gown. It may be nippy, so stick to heavy fabrics like guipure lace or silk mikado. For a formal celebration, consider a fabric with a shine or luster such as satin or silk velvet. "Traditionally you would not wear an organza or organdy dress," says Mark Ingram, owner of the Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier in New York City. "These fabrics are fine for summer or spring weddings, but they are too sheer for fall." To stay toasty during the ceremony, wear a stole or matching bolero.

Advice From Town&Country Weddings

Our brides are raving about the great advice they were able to receive at our recent Summer Salon with Style. Heidi Mitchell, Editor in Chief of Town&Country Weddings was on hand to speak with many of the brides and their mothers. As Editor, Heidi hand picks the gorgeous real weddings and luxurious fashions that grace the pages of Town&Country Weddings. We asked her to tell us some of the tips she shared with guests at the event.

"At the Mark Ingram bridal event last week, I had the opportunity to talk with some real brides – who of course made their first post-engagement stop the Mark Ingram Atelier. It was a pleasure to get to hear their stories and to discuss some of the issues that brides face. One in particular wondered what was appropriate for a fall bride to wear. I walked her around and showed her some looks in the space, explaining that, in cooler weather, you can go for heavier fabrics and more embroidery. Strapless is still great, but you should consider a shrug or wrap – not only to keep you warm outside, but to vary photography. I love the idea of a funky shrug paired with a sleek A-line strapless gown – the look is timeless.
Another bride asked about what her mother should consider wearing. This one is tricky, as you don’t really want to tell Mom what she must wear, but then again, you don’t want to see her sashaying down the aisle in a white gown with a train! It’s important to steer the mother of the bride toward age-appropriate looks. This can still mean a sleeveless dress or even cocktail length, but simplicity is key. She should look elegant, not overpower the bride in her style, and not have too much going on. Sway her away from colors that are too neutral – a pale champagne can look a little bit like mom is competing with the bride. Although she is likely footing the bill, technically, this is not her day (although my groom reminded me throughout the whole process that it actually was all about mom, so there you go!)."

A Summer Salon with Style

Recently, we hosted A Summer Salon with Style with our dear friends Michelle Rago, Sylvia Weinstock, Ellen Weldon, Brian Dorsey and Town & Country Weddings. We created the Summer Salon with Style so that brides would have an opportunity to meet and personally speak with some of the best creative minds in the bridal industry. The event was a smashing success! All of the brides who attended loved the individual attention and advice from the vendors as well as from Town&Country Editor in Chief Pamela Fiore, Town&Country Weddings Editor in Chief Heidi Mitchell and Town&Country Weddings Fashion Editor Anna Reyes.

The Mom's Dress Code

N.Y.C. Bridal Atelier owner Mark Ingram, creator of Mark Ingram Atelier 2, for moms, explains how to avoid a MOB (mother-of-the-bride) scene
Tell them what you're wearing. The moms should take cues from you. "Let them know the shape, fabric and level of ornamentation of your dress so they can look for outfits that are in keeping with the tone," says Ingram.

Send your mom shopping first. "Traditionally, the mother of the bride buys her dress and then describes it to the mother of the groom," says Ingram. "Communication is key." Send his mother a photo, or tell her the color, style and designer so she can be careful not to outshine your mom—or dress as though she belongs at a different event.

Give them guidelines. It's well within your rights to steer both moms toward specific colors or styles (and away from others). How much influence you'll have depends on their personalities; but in a perfect world, they should follow these rules:

• Keep it in the (color) family. Choosing varying shades of your wedding palette makes things cohesive without looking too matchy-matchy.

• Nothing overly sexy. Even if Mom has been living at the gym, ask her to keep the hemline at the knee or below and the neckline on the conservative side.

• Their drama level should be below yours. If your dress has sleeves, theirs shouldn't be strapless; if you're wearing a sheath, they shouldn't be in ball gowns.

• No white. You'd be surprised at how many moms and mothers-in-law convince themselves that a "cream" dress is appropriate.

Mark's Shopping Tips for Brides

One of the most common questions I am asked is "Can you give us some bridal gown shopping tips?" Below are my top 5:

1. It is very important to have an actual wedding date and venue. The Bridal Atelier Sales consultants will help you select a gown that is perfect for your setting.

2. Bring tear sheet, photos and downloaded web images of styles of gowns you wish to try on. Bridal Atelier consultants will make additional style recommendations based on your initial conversation.

3. Before scheduling an appointment, make sure the salons you have selected feature gowns in your price range.

4. In general, limit your shopping companions to the one or two persons whose opinions mean the most. You don't need to be pulled in several directions.

5. Wear proper undergarments. You will want to see how the gowns look with good support.

One of my favorite things is the New York Bridal Market. Not only is it a thrill for me to view the beautiful new bridal collections, but it's a great time for me to catch up with all my friends in the industry. Above is a pic from this past market held in April with Lela Rose. Lela's designs are a favorite of my brides. When she burst onto the bridal scene from ready-to-wear, she started the whole "organic couture" trend in bridal. And no one does it as well!!! Mark Ingram Atelier 2

Mark Ingram Atelier 2 is an appointment only salon that focuses solely on mothers of the bride and groom and special occasion dressing. Much like Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier, Atelier 2 offers a high level of personalized service with a full time seamstress on site to customize orders and provide a perfect fit for every garment. The salon only allocates one appointment at a time to insure privacy and allow each client to receive their consultant's full attention. A key component in Mr. Ingram opening this second, separate location was so that this clientele could receive the highest level of service and style. He has personally worked with a select group of designers to choose an elegant array of sophisticated and fashionable gowns perfect for any special occasion.
